El Progreso

El Progreso is a land of contrasts since plane lands are dominated by a hot, dry almost desert weather, while huge humid template forests are found in the mountains.

The amazing Sierra de Las Minas Mountain Chain is one of the most important tourist sites offered to visitors in the department of El Progreso.

Natural Spa and Poza Los Platanos
This strange but beautiful site combines with various elements of unknown interest.  It is located at the municipium of Sanarate, exactly where the Platanos River crosses out with the old road to Guatemala City in the east side of the department.  At this point, there is a hot water small river, which softly comes down from the mountain slopes.  Water’s temperature changes at different sites, because of the mixture of the hot waters with cold ones.  This is an ideal place to swim, take a bath, light a rustic campfire and enjoy a delicious roast, or even fish of just to rest under a tree shadow.

The Guaytan archaeological site is located between San Agustin Acasaguastlan and the Magdalena village, since as per some people used to be occupied by the east poqoman culture.

If you wish to get a break on the road and eat or drink something, just stop at El Rancho, where natives offer a variety of food, beverages, fruits, vegetables, and other, before you continue your trip to the east side of the country.

Local fairs: Guastatoya, January 15; Morazán, December 25; San Agustin Acuasaguastlan, August 28; San Cristobal Acasaguastlan, July 25; El Jicaro, December 25; Sansare, September 24; Sanarate, November 14; and San Antonio La Paz, June 13.
