Home > Cities > Peten It is the northern most department of the country. It borders Mexico to the north and west, and Belize to the east its huge territory is considered as one of the breathing lungs of the planet Earth, due to its dense vegetation. Peten has several protected areas, especially the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, which contains more than a million hectares of humid sub-tropical forest. It is the department with the richiest and most vegetations and the most varied wildlife in the whole country. The name Peten comes from pre-Columbine words, since the Mayas called their islands "Petenes", later calling the whole region as such.
It is also notable for being one of the main territories of the Mayan culture settlements during the Classic period. It is recomended that you fly from Guatemala City (30 minute flight), or you can drive (10 to 12 hours by car). You will find all sorts of accomodations in the towns of Flores ans Santa Elena, such as hotels, restaurants, guides and 4X4 vehicles.
Tikal the northen lowland of el peten and its tropical rainforest is one of the lungs of our planet. There are several protected areas in peten, one of them the mayan biosphere reserve, with over one million hectares of subtropical rainforest.
Today, we still call this "el mundo maya" the world of the maya. the development of the maya culture covers three periods: pre-classic, classic and post-classic.
