Puerto Barrios

It's the department capital city and is located 297kilometers ( 185 miles) from Guatemala City. It is the starting point for navigating along the 42-km-long Río Dulce river . Here you'll find the main commercial shops, hotels, restaurants and nigth clubs.

The department of Izabal can be reached using the CA-9 Highway , also called the Atlantic coast highway. It is excellent place to go fishing, diving, skiing or practicing any other water sport, combining it with visits to archeological sites and perhaps touch with nature.

Places to visit :

Livingston
Its inhabitants are of Afro-Caribbean origin. It was first inhabited by immigrants from the Caribbean islands in the XVIII century. It is placed on the river mouth of the Rio Dulce river on the Caribbean sea side, for which means “the mouth”, given its location.

This village can only be reached by boat. Its main festivities are cried out during Easter week, with a live reenactment of the passion of Christ, November 26th in honor of San Isidro Labrador, and December 12th to worship the Guadalupe virgin. It is currently a fishermen village of mainly garífunas, people crossbred between blacks an indians, wholive in multicolored wooden house, and still keep their rots and traditions, especially when it comes to the artistic and gastronomic aspects of their lives.

Music is always present in their daily lives and in their festivities. All music is performed using ligth-percussion instruments, such as the chíchara, the key, and the slap, etc. often using guitars.

From Livingston, you the most beautiful beaches in Guatemala, by boat, and book excursions to Siete Altares ( paradise siete water sports, including diving.

Chocon Machacas Biotopo ( Natural Reserve)
This is a natural wildlife reserve located along the north bank of the Rio Dulce river- e Golfete –it is a protect area with great natural wealth, including a large amount of forestes, mangle trees and lagoons; it also has a boat dock and several tracks and camping areas. This is the manatee's natural habitat, which is at risk of extinction and is also the largest water mammal in the country .

Rio Dulce
This is the to the ocean of the Izabal lake. It is spans almost 42 kilometers and ends on the Amatique Bay. It has a wider portion along its path, know as the Golfete (62km.) which can almost be considered a lagoon. All of the river banks are covered be vegetation. At is opening, one can see many big cliffs together with waterfalls from Finca el Paraíso's thermal beds.

San Felipe Castle
Historical monument, is was built on the XVI century prevent the attack of pirates that invaded Guatemala through the Atlantic coast. It is one of the most important tourist spots of the area. It has the usual service areas and other facilities for tourist.

Lake Izabal:
It is the lake in the country and is surrounded by lost of vegetation and beautiful beaches, such as El Estor, Mariscos, and Playa Dorada, which makes it a beautiful place. It is a navigable lake, and when winds are high, huge waves can be formed. Some years ago, along one of the lake's shores, a company called Exmibal used to extract nickel ore from the ground.

Amatique Bay:
It is a great place place to visit given its numerous marine environments. Some of the beaches have white sand have lots of vegetation along the coastline. The following can be visited: Punta de Cocoli, Punta de Palma, Punta de Manabique, Santo Tomâs Bay, La Graciosa Bay and the channel of the British.
This is a very important archeological site, and was declared Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It is located along banana plantations in the region of the Motagua River lower valley. The Motagua river valley seems to have been inhabited as early as the Motagua river valley seems to have been inhabited as early as the Pre-classic period (1500 B. C. ) until recently.

Quiriguá
Archeological research has shown that Quiriguá used to be inhabited since the beginning of the early classic period (250-400 A. C. ) or even earlier, until its collapse by the end of the late Classic period (600-900 A. C. )

Its peoples' lives and economy were based on corn agriculture and other crops. It is possible that the site was settled there in order to control the trade route that was used along the Atlantic Ocean. It was from here also that jade and obsidian exportation could be controlled.

The Quiriguá archeological site is structured as follows:
The Major Center: Most of it still buried underground. Since it is the later structures that are uncovered, we are able to see what appears to be structures that belong to the classic period of occupation .

The Central Plaza:
It was probably a public place used for celebration of large religious ceremonies. The famous carved stone stelae and zoomorphs arre located in this plaza.

Ball Game Court:
This place was conserved for the ceremonial sporting events. Its remains are enclosed within a plaza surrounded by staircases on three of its sides.
